Color Skateboard Magazine 6.5 - Strange Brew

Strange Brew is about to pop-off. Stay tuned for a premiere date, and check out Color Magazine 6.5 right here.

wordsby sandro grison

I’m the first to argue at the slightest sign of generalization, but in regards to the work of filmer/director Kurt Filiponne and producer Chris Ritchie, these Canadian stereotypes hit pretty accurately. After-all, they celebrate the satire of late 70s SCTV sketch “The Great White North” hosted by characters Bob (Rick Moranis) and Doug (Dave Thomas) McKenzie. In particular, Filiponne and Ritchie’s first full-length skateboard film is named after Bob and Doug’s 1983 Strange Brew movie. And while Filipone and Ritchie may not be brothers by blood, they certainly share a vision of what’s important to them: home (Canada), hockey, skateboarding and, lastly, beer.

SHOWIN OFF SOME CRAZY SPOT.

Jussi!

This is our another friend we met along the way... Jussi Toropainen from Helsinki, Finland. You can catch Jussi all over Europe skating contests and street skating. In the winter months you can catch him around the Mediterranean sometimes with a baguette in hand. We were also fortunate enough to sit down to some really good home cooked food with friends. He just sent me some tricks and will be making an appearance in the video.

Introducing Kyle Desaulniers

This is Kyle, he rides for Kitsch and he's going to have some tricks in Strange Brew. He's pretty hard to track down and will not pick up his phone while he's eating. He spends a lot of time at the plaza and yesterday he filmed a line downtown. He can eat a ridiculous amount of sushi and last night he ate a whole tray of cones.

Spencer in the new SBC

Where was your first trip overseas?

"It was Barcelona and all of my hommies had gone before, so I heard a lot of different stories. Then you get there and you're like: Fuck all that. This is the best place ever. The food, drinks, skating, people, atmosphere and weather are amazing. You get off the plane and you get high off granite and marble. You feel proper on your board there."

We were all happy to be a part of that first trip. Check out more SBC right here.

Fyfe vs. The Fairer Sex

Taken from the late summer issue of SBC Magazine:

"It has its ups and downs. I don't really try to use the skateboard card. I mainly get by on my smile and my charm. I'm just a really good looking guy. What can I say? Not to brag but I'm one of Vancouver's most eligible bachelors. And now, with this scar over my eye, it's only going to get better. Chicks dig scars. I've skated longer than I've known most of the girls I hang out with, so the skateboard always comes first."

Wilson eh

Cory just picked a heater track for the video. Here's a photo from the Kitsch article 'Chocolate Dreams On Mars' that came out in Concrete a while ago. Macallister still owes me Bocatta twice and I haven't forgotten about that. We're super stoked on the song here and lets just say the kid has soul man. Strange Brew takes off soon eh!

Younger Ryan Smith

I filmed this on one of the Tough Guy Tours I went on years ago. Somehow I came across it on my Lacie. Nice flick in a Hooter's tee! If I can remember correctly Astleford varielheeled it and Hayes almost did a sick back three. I think the night before we all got thrown out of a strip club for filming the party inside. Good memories.

Today we went to White Rock

Magnus, Brad, Hanlon, Max and I all went out to White Rock today. There was a really nice light on things a little later in the day around sunset.

Down at Color

Fyfe and I spent Thursday morning down at the magazine checking up on things. Our feature article is ready for the next issue so make sure you pick up the mag. There's photos from all our trips and everybody's making an appearance, it's looking sick! Thanks Dylan for making coffee. Sandro even suggested having a Strange Brew hockey game vs. Jarvis's video. I'm fully down and I'm pretty sure our special teams would be unstoppable. Ritchie claimed he'd play goalie.

"I'm a sniper."

Here’s some insight into the kind of work that gets put into being a great player in the NBA. Not really skateboarding related, but it could be inspiring to whatever it is you do.

My boy Daley!

If you've seen this thing at Forum then you know how messed up this backside flip is. I just bought an ill clip of Sascha off my new favorite filmer Zach Barton. No relation to Oliver. This kid has his own way of setting up the vx-1000 and I like it.

Jeremy Reeves in Strange Brew

Also making an appearance in Strange Brew is our friend from San Francisco, CA. Jeremy joined us in China for what turned out to be quite a cultural experience. Reeves is super versatile and skates almost everything in sight. He loves to go fakie and can be seen in the new City video 'WHAT THE FUCK IS A BACHINSKY' ripping. He's a huge addition to our movie and is sitting on a over a minute skating spots that haven't been so much seen.
